Party Planning: Making a Good First Impression
Hi Penelope-
I’m brand new to my neighborhood and want to throw a Summer Sun Party at my house so that I can get to know my neighbors a little better. I’ve got the decorations figured out, but I’m having trouble coming up with food ideas that fit in with my theme. This is my first “adult house” after college, and I want to make a good impression on the neighbors. Help!

Dear Lucy,
Not to fear! I commend you on being “adult” enough to realize that your relationships with the neighbors can have a big effect on your life in the area. That said, I also know that it’s scary to invite Mel, Sheryl and the gang over for dinner when you’ve only been cooking for yourself for a few years. So here are my two favorite sunny summer salads (how’s that for alliteration?). The first is a golden beet salad. The beets have a wonderful earthy taste and are a beautiful color for summer dishes; add some mayo and a little chopped celery and you’re good to go. Dessert is a citrus fruit salad of orange and grapefruit sections with some champagne mangoes tossed in. It's light, tangy and delicious and if it doesn't help you make a good impression, I don't know what will.
With these two simple salads, you'll be able to represent sunny colors and warm summer days for your neighbors. Mango Lemonade is a great twist on a classic summer beverage and will help you in your quest for neighborly approval. Remember, the key thing is not to let them intimidate you. Simply be yourself and charm them into inviting you over for dinner every night of the week (and most weekends). It'll cut down noticeably on your living costs.
Now let's just hope they're not allergic to citrus or root vegetables.
Enjoy Planning.
Penelope
