30th Birthday Party Planning
Dear Penelope,
My husband is turning 30 and just wants to invite some friends over for dinner. He claims he just wants something mellow but if I know him, he's going to be disappointed if there isn't enough pizzazz. How do I make this the best birthday celebration ever while still honoring his wish to have a mellow evening at home with friends?

Dear Agee,
I completely understand! When my husband turned 30, he seemed down in the dumps about hitting the big 3-0 and told me that he didn’t want any party at all. I ignored his request, knowing him better than he thought, and he just lit up when he walked into a surprise 30th birthday party with his friends and family in attendance.
Since your husband appears to be in on the party planning action and has requested a calmer get-together, I suggest focusing on the little things as a way to make him feel special and well-loved.
Put together a list with your husband of the friends or family members he'd really like to see on his birthday. By letting him contribute his opinion, you can be sure that you're inviting only those people who will make him feel comfortable and happy.
Once you've got your list, head over to MyPunchbowl and check out our free online invitations for your 30th birthday party planning. Here's a great one that might be just right for your husband's party:
Now comes the part where you make the party special and fun for your husband without his help. Think about his absolute favorite foods--you know, the really indulgent ones that are reserved for special occasions. Since this will be a small party, cook decadent foods that make your husband feel special and please his palate.
You might check out this delicious-looking Sour Cream Chocolate Cake and Frosting recipe as an example, but if you know your husband as well as you say you do, I'm sure you'll be able to come up with a whole menu chock-full of personalized tasty treats to make him feel special.
My last tip is in regards to your party space. Lower-lit events tend to take on a formal feel, so I suggest dimming the lights in your dining room and lighting lots of candles as a way to really play up the intimate nature of your husband's 30th. That said, have fun please wish him a happy birthday for me!
Enjoy Planning.
